EV and Kai's Observations

From Evelyn:
I can't believe we're actually in Taiwan! It's different than I thought it would be. I thought it would be way less city-ish. It seems sort of like Salt Lake City so far. The air is super hot and it gets even worse when you are around people smoking. Well, it's been pretty fun. The breakfasts are really delicious. My favorite thing for breakfast was dan bing - it's like an egg wrapped around some doughy tortilla.

The morning market was probably the most crowded place in the city - it's so filled! There are tons of scooters. The pig foot for sale still had the skin on it. It was super gross! I've actually tried pig stomach before, and it's actually pretty good!

The people are pretty nice. I got to do some sort of Chinese dance - I forgot what it was called. I did it with my mom because it looked fun. Some old people by the high school were dancing in the morning for exercise and we joined in. I can remember 3 steps to the dances, and that's all.

From Kai:
When we arrived in Taiwan my first thought was: Man, it is hot!

Twenty-six hours earlier we left from Salt Lake City. We first flew to San Francisco, but I didn’t get to see the Golden Gate Bridge. Then we flew straight to Taipei, Taiwan’s capital. The flight took about 14 hours and I got to watch a bunch of movies like Inside Out, The Hobbit, and Interstellar. Though we arrived at the place we were staying in the early evening for Taiwan, for us it was about 7:30 in the morning.

The next morning we went to a morning market. A morning market has all different types of foods, like pig brains and hearts, and chicken heads. We didn't get the pig brains but we did get an Asian pear and a wax apple.

For breakfast we ate danbing, which is like an egg burrito, and soy milk. I have had them both quite a few times now. At first the soy milk was gross, but the more we had it, the better it got. The danbing, soy milk, and fruit has become the perfect breakfast.

Later that day, after the sun set at 6pm, we got to go to the night market. It was almost as crazy as the morning market, but with less weird food and more cool stuff. We saw a guy wearing a T-shirt and women's pantyhose giving some speech about them. He was yelling out to the audience how the pantyhose “Will never get ruined!” And every once in awhile he would show off his leg to the 20 or so people watching him. He even made some poses for me when I took his picture.

Everywhere there were people shouting stuff like “Buy this!” I probably need to work on my Chinese some more, because I didn’t understand most of what I heard.

I saw some cool stuff, and I got some ideas for souvenirs for all the requests from my friends, but my mom wouldn't let us buy anything, because it was only our first day in Taiwan. But we did play some games that we we thought were free. After we played a couple, an angry lady came after us demanding some money. Then my mom told us not to play any more games. The best treat from the night market was papaya milk. In the markets it is fresh, but we also love it in a carton from 7-11, where we buy some as often as we can.

After spending a whole day in Taiwan, I felt hot, sweaty, and excited for more delicious food and our next adventure.
